Bio
The son of 1948 premiership player and long-serving club administrator George Bickford, Stephen Bickford arrived at Melbourne carrying a famous name but found regular senior opportunities difficult to secure during the tumultuous Ron Barassi era. Recruited from the club's metropolitan zone, he made his debut in the opening round of the 1980 season, utilised primarily as a wingman or utility capable of drifting forward to hit the scoreboard. Despite playing ten games in his debut year, he struggled to cement a permanent place in the lineup and added just five more appearances the following season before departing the VFL level at the conclusion of 1981.
