Recruited from the prestigious Assumption College football factory, Francesco "Frank" Rugolo was a livewire small forward and rover who possessed natural goal sense but struggled to command a permanent place at the elite level. His initial tenure at Melbourne saw him listed alongside his brother Joe, yet he remained on the fringe of the senior side, often producing high goal tallies in the reserves without gaining an extended run. A true journeyman of the era, Rugolo moved to Footscray for the 1987 season and then to St Kilda in 1988, but added few games to his tally at both clubs. While his VFL career was fleeting, Rugolo later cemented his status as a VFA icon at Sandringham, where he became a premiership player and the competition's leading goalkicker in the early 1990s.
