Bio
Recruited from the prestigious Assumption College football program, Joe Rugolo was a tall ruckman who struggled to cement a regular spot in the Melbourne lineup during the mid-1980s. He managed just eight senior appearances over three seasons, sharing his time at the club with his brother Frank, though the siblings never played a senior match together. While his tenure at the top level was brief, Rugolo became a genuine star in the VFA after crossing to Sandringham. He forged a decorated career with the Zebras, winning the 1992 J.J. Liston Trophy, claiming the Norm Goss Medal as best afield in the 1992 premiership victory, and eventually earning selection in Sandringham's Team of the Century.
