Family

Recruited from St Bernards, Frank Dunell established himself as a versatile utility at Windy Hill, capable of filling holes in defence or drifting forward to hit the scoreboard. While often overshadowed by the star power of the Kevin Sheedy era, Dunell was a vital structural component of the side and etched his name into club folklore during the 1984 Grand Final. Starting on the interchange bench, he was injected into the game to kick a pivotal goal during the Bombers' famous last-quarter blitz, helping to break the club's lengthy premiership drought against Hawthorn.

Following his success at Essendon, Dunell headed north to join the Brisbane Bears for their inaugural season in 1987. The move saw him provide much-needed experience and leadership to the fledgling interstate franchise, where he played out the final two years of his career. Although his time in Queensland was brief, he is best remembered as a reliable swingman who played a specific and successful role in one of Essendon's most celebrated premiership victories.
