Bio
The son of 1984 Essendon premiership player Frank Dunell, Sam Dunell was a mature-age recruit selected by St Kilda in the Rookie Draft after impressing with the Bendigo Bombers. A versatile utility with elite endurance and strong overhead marking ability, he was deployed at both ends of the ground, often operating as a lead-up forward or an intercepting defender. Despite consistently performing at the state league level, Dunell found it difficult to cement a regular spot in the senior side during a period of list regeneration for the Saints, managing just 12 games across his tenure. Following his delisting at the end of 2014, he forged a distinguished career in the VFL, winning a premiership with Williamstown and later captaining the Sandringham Zebras.
