Bio
Born in the Victorian country town of St Arnaud, Fred James arrived at Geelong via the Mercantile Football Club. He was granted a late-season trial in 1908, making his VFL debut in Round 16 against the short-lived University side at the East Melbourne Cricket Ground. James managed to boot a goal during his brief stint in the hoops, which concluded the following week with a heavy loss to Essendon. Unable to cement a permanent place in the Pivotonians' lineup, his senior career was confined to that single fortnight of football.
