Stats
Bio
Recruited from local side Mercantile, Les James was the most prominent of three brothers to represent Geelong, with siblings Fred and Syd also wearing the hoops during the early 20th century. Operating primarily as a rover and winger, James was a lightly built player noted for his dash and ability to read the play, serving as a creative link man rather than a scoreboard threat. He became a consistent fixture in the Geelong lineup, missing very few matches during his seven-year tenure. His career was brought to a premature halt by the First World War; after playing his final game in 1915, he enlisted in the AIF and was killed in action at Passchendaele in 1917, one of the many VFL footballers who made the ultimate sacrifice.
