Bio
Recruited from Coragulac in the Hampden Football League, Fred Lynch was a dashing half-back flanker who showed immediate promise during a brief stint with Essendon in 1956. Playing on match permits while maintaining his family farm, Lynch featured in six of the season's first eight rounds, impressing the club hierarchy with his safe hands and drive from defence. However, the demands of travel and farming proved too great, and he chose to return to the country rather than commit to a VFL career—a decision the Bombers' annual report described as a "bitter blow" given their shortage of quality defenders. He went on to become a star in the bush, winning the Hampden League's Maskell Medal in 1961, and his football legacy eventually continued at the elite level through his son Paul Lynch, who played 62 games for Geelong in the 1990s.
