Bio
Recruited from Old Haileyburians in the VAFA, Garry Phillips was a second-generation footballer, the son of former South Melbourne player Ken Phillips. Selected by Geelong with pick 48 in the 1989 Pre-season Draft, he managed three senior appearances during the 1990 season but struggled to cement a spot in Malcolm Blight’s star-studded lineup. Despite being delisted, Phillips showed enough promise in the reserves to be redrafted by the Cats with pick 26 in the 1992 Pre-season Draft, a rare instance of a player being given a second lifeline by the same club. A mid-sized utility, his career is largely defined by his persistence on the fringe of a powerful Geelong squad that regularly contested finals during his tenure.
