Recruited from East Burwood in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, Ken Phillips was a reliable wingman who plied his trade for South Melbourne during the 1960s. Making his debut in 1963, he utilized his pace and delivery to hold down a spot on the flank at the Lakeside Oval, providing outside run in a team heavily reliant on the brilliance of captain Bob Skilton. Phillips' time in the VFL was punctuated by a season on the sidelines in 1965, but he returned to become a consistent contributor for the Bloods in the latter half of the decade. He remained a dedicated servant of the club until the end of 1969, concluding his senior career with 60 games well before the franchise's eventual relocation north.
