Bio
Recruited from Stawell in the Wimmera, Gary "Bronco" Grainger was a tall ruckman-forward who arrived at Essendon with football in his blood as the son of former St Kilda player George Grainger. Standing 191cm, he showed early potential as a strong-marking target capable of pinch-hitting in the ruck, notably kicking two goals on debut against Carlton in 1970. Although he was a popular clubman who won the Best Team Man award in 1971, Grainger found it difficult to hold a regular senior spot in the Bombers' lineup and left the VFL after just three seasons. He subsequently carved out a distinguished tenure in the VFA with Preston, where he served as captain, before moving into captain-coaching roles with East Devonport in Tasmania and Lalor in the Diamond Valley.
