Recruited from Jordanville, Gavin Bayes is a former key position forward best known as the elder brother of long-serving Sydney Swans defender Mark Bayes. Standing 191cm and noted for his ability to kick effectively on either foot, he struggled to translate his dominant reserves form into senior opportunities at Richmond, managing just five games across three seasons despite topping the Tigers’ reserves goalkicking in 1987. He crossed to Melbourne for the 1988 season in search of a fresh start but was unable to break into the Demons' senior lineup, spending the year in the reserves before being delisted. While his VFL career was brief, Bayes later forged a formidable reputation in country football, becoming a prolific spearhead for Barooga in the Murray Football League where he twice topped the century mark for goals in a season.
