Bio
Recruited from Noble Park, Mark Bayes became a symbol of loyalty and versatility during a transformative era for the Sydney Swans. A smooth-moving left-footer, he established himself as a true utility capable of influencing the contest from almost any position. While he offered a reliable avenue to goal—topping the club's goalkicking in 1990—he played some of his finest football as a rebounding defender, where his composure and precise distribution set the standard for his teammates.
Bayes remained with the Swans through their precarious financial struggles of the early 1990s, serving as a pillar of stability while many contemporaries sought opportunities elsewhere. His individual brilliance was recognised with the 1989 Bob Skilton Medal and All-Australian selection, highlighting his quality in a team that often found wins hard to come by. Upon his retirement in 1998, he held the club record for games played, and his enduring contribution was formally acknowledged with his selection on the interchange bench in the Sydney Swans Team of the Century.
