Bio
Recruited from Templestowe, Gavin "Rowdy" Brown established himself as one of Collingwood's most reliable and courageous figures during a defining era for the club. While he began his career as a winger capable of taking a strong overhead mark, he eventually developed into a versatile utility who could influence the game as a key forward, centre half-back, or heavy-bodied midfielder. His quiet demeanour belied a fierce competitive streak, best exemplified during the 1990 Grand Final where he recovered from a knockout blow in a quarter-time brawl to play a pivotal role in the Magpies' historic drought-breaking premiership.
Brown's standing at Victoria Park was cemented through his consistent excellence and leadership, resulting in three Copeland Trophies and selection in the Collingwood Team of the Century. He succeeded legendary skipper Tony Shaw as captain in 1994, leading the side for five seasons during a challenging transition period for the club. Renowned for his fearlessness and ability to stand up in big moments, Brown retired in 2000 as a highly respected one-club player, leaving a legacy defined by grit and unyielding loyalty to the black and white stripes.
