Recruited from Alphington Amateurs, Geoff Nicholls was a persistent wingman and forward whose VFL career was significantly defined by the interruptions of World War II. After breaking into the Collingwood side for two games in 1940, he crossed to Fitzroy the following season where he spent the remainder of his league tenure. His time at the top level was heavily fragmented by his service in the Australian Army, resulting in sporadic appearances throughout the early 1940s and a lengthy absence from senior football between 1944 and 1948. Despite these setbacks, Nicholls returned to the Maroons to play his most consistent football nearly a decade after his debut, holding down a spot in the senior side during the late 1940s before retiring as a serviceable wartime utility.
