Bio
Recruited from the Essendon Juniors, George "Titch" Shorten became the symbolic heart of the club's celebrated "Mosquito Fleet" during their golden run in the early 1920s. Standing at just 163cm and weighing approximately 51kg, Shorten remains one of the lightest players in league history, yet he compensated for his slight frame with electric pace and a fearless attack on the football. Primarily a wingman and rover, he was a pivotal figure in the Bombers' back-to-back flags, starring in the 1924 triumph and being named best on ground in the 1923 Grand Final victory over Fitzroy. His influence was such that he finished equal runner-up in the inaugural Brownlow Medal count of 1924, falling just one vote short of victory. After representing Victoria in 1925, Shorten's VFL career concluded prematurely the following season after he accepted a captain-coach role with Albury St Patrick's in the Ovens and Murray League.
