Recruited from Diamond Creek, Gordon Coventry joined his brother and future captain Syd at Victoria Park, forming the nucleus of what became the most dominant dynasty in VFL history. While he started his career in 1920, his dominance grew alongside the team's fortunes, eventually seeing him become the focal point of the legendary "Machine" side that secured four consecutive premierships from 1927 to 1930. A one-club player, he was a picture of durability and consistency throughout the 1920s and 30s, rarely missing matches and consistently topping the league's goal-kicking table.

Coventry was not a spectacular high-flyer in the mould of some contemporaries, but rather a powerful, lead-up full-forward who relied on strength and positioning. Possessing a stocky frame and strong hands, he used his body to protect the drop zone and possessed a deceptive turn of speed on the lead that left defenders trailing. His finishing was lethal, utilising a flat punt or drop kick that ensured he maximised his opportunities in front of goal. This efficient style allowed him to become the first player in league history to break the 100-goal barrier in a single season, a feat he achieved in 1929.
