Bio
Carrying one of the most revered surnames in Collingwood history, Syd Coventry jnr arrived at Victoria Park while his father—Magpie legend Syd Sr—was serving as club president. Recruited from Alphington, he spent the 1953 season developing in the reserves before breaking into the senior lineup midway through 1954 to replace the injured Bill Rose. Standing 185cm, he was a tall utility who operated as a follower and defender, competing hard during a seven-game stint that proved to be his only taste of VFL football. While his career was short-lived compared to the daunting records of his father and uncle Gordon, he remains a permanent part of the club’s most famous dynasty.
