Bio
Recruited from VFA club Preston, Gordon Mackie’s arrival at Carlton was delayed by a bitter clearance wrangle that saw him accused of "playing dead" in local matches to force a transfer. While his brother Ken signed with Fitzroy, Gordon eventually joined the Blues in 1932 and immediately secured the centre half-back post with his strong overhead marking and uncompromising physical presence. He was a sensation in his debut year, standing tall as Carlton's best player in the 1932 Grand Final loss to Richmond, and backed it up by topping the club’s Brownlow Medal count the following season. Despite establishing himself as one of the league's premier defenders, Mackie’s time at the top was brief, with persistent injuries forcing him into premature retirement after just 60 games.
