Bio
A medical student at Melbourne University, Gordon Morrissey briefly broke into the senior side to play two games during the Students' final VFL season in 1914. He remained loyal to the club the following year when they withdrew from the league to compete in the Metropolitan Amateur Football Association, playing on until his studies and the war intervened. While his time at the elite level was fleeting, Morrissey’s post-football legacy was distinguished; he served in the First World War before relocating to Ingham, Queensland, where he became a celebrated physician. He was eventually appointed an OBE for his groundbreaking medical work in the 1930s, specifically for identifying burning cane before harvest as a method to control outbreaks of Leptospirosis among sugar cane workers.
