Bio
Recruited from St Kevin's Old Boys, James Morrissey faced the difficult task of breaking into Hawthorn's powerhouse lineup during the mid-1980s. It took several seasons for him to cement a regular spot in the senior side, but he eventually established himself as a vital component of the Hawks' forward setup during their dominant run under Allan Jeans and Alan Joyce. Known affectionately by fans and teammates as "Freak," Morrissey was a creative half-forward flanker renowned for his evasive skills and ability to manufacture goals from limited opportunities.
While superstars like Jason Dunstall and Dermott Brereton commanded the spotlight, Morrissey operated effectively as an unselfish link player who could be relied upon to hit targets inside 50. His career is defined by his success in September, becoming a three-time premiership player with victories in 1988, 1989, and 1991. Despite battling hamstring issues that eventually brought his time at the top level to a close in 1993, his contribution to one of the greatest teams in VFL/AFL history remains highly regarded, with his longevity in such a competitive squad serving as a testament to his value.
