Recruited from VFA club Sunshine after a standout season where he finished third in the J.J. Liston Trophy, Graeme "Gubby" Allan quickly established himself as a clever and highly skilled utility at Fitzroy. Debuting in 1975, he was primarily used as a centreman who could drift forward and hit the scoreboard, booting 97 goals across his six seasons with the Lions. Allan was known for his adaptability and football smarts, traits that made him a consistent performer and earned him selection for Victoria in interstate football.

Allan crossed to Collingwood in 1981 and made an immediate impact, slotting into a half-back flank role for the Magpies' Grand Final side that same year. While his debut season in black and white ended in a heartbreaking loss to Carlton, he remained a key senior figure at Victoria Park for another five seasons. Though he was a reliable ball-winner and goal-kicker, his profound influence on the game extended well beyond his playing retirement in 1986, as he transitioned into one of the era's most successful football administrators, orchestrating premiership lists for both Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions.
