Bio
Recruited from Springvale in the VFA, Graham Dempster broke into the South Melbourne side as a 17-year-old in 1972, developing into a tall utility capable of holding down a key position at either end of the ground. While primarily utilised as a defender, he showed promise as a forward later in his VFL tenure, highlighted by a career-best five-goal haul against Footscray in 1977. His progress was significantly hampered by injuries, most notably a ruptured medial ligament in the opening round of 1978 that sidelined him for the entire season. After leaving the Swans, he returned to Springvale to forge a successful VFA career, eventually captaining the club and playing in a premiership. His contribution to South Melbourne proved vital decades later, as his 64 games ensured his son, 2005 premiership defender Sean Dempster, was eligible to be drafted to Sydney under the father-son rule.
