Bio
Recruited from the Gippsland Power with pick 34 in the 2002 National Draft, Sean Dempster began his career at the Sydney Swans where his father, Graham, had previously played. A disciplined and quiet achiever, he quickly cemented a spot in the senior side, featuring in Sydney's historic 2005 premiership victory and the 2006 Grand Final loss. Despite this early team success, he was traded to St Kilda following the 2007 season alongside Adam Schneider in exchange for pick 26, a move orchestrated by former Swans assistant Ross Lyon that is widely regarded as one of the most astute trades in St Kilda's history.
At Moorabbin, Dempster evolved from a role player into one of the league's most reliable defenders, characterised by his elite fitness, courage, and ability to play on opponents of varying sizes. He became a central figure in the Saints' stingy defensive unit, playing in another three Grand Finals across 2009 and 2010 to become a rare five-time Grand Finalist. His individual standing peaked in 2012 when he earned All-Australian honours and finished third in the Trevor Barker Award, recognised for his prowess as an intercept mark and his disciplined spoiling. A revered leader who eventually joined the club's leadership group, Dempster retired early in the 2017 season due to ongoing concussion concerns, departing as a highly respected clubman who maximized every ounce of his potential.
