Bio
Greg Stafford holds a significant place in Sydney Swans history as a successful local product, recruited from the Western Suburbs Magpies in the 1992 National Draft at a time when New South Wales-born players were a rarity at the elite level. Emerging as a raw teenager, he developed into a formidable ruckman known for his imposing physical presence and aggression, becoming a key pillar in the Swans' resurgence during the mid-1990s and playing in the 1996 Grand Final. Over nine seasons in the Harbour City, Stafford established himself as a competitive primary ruckman who could drift forward and impact the scoreboard, a versatility that made him a valuable structural asset during the Ron Barassi and Rodney Eade eras.
Seeking a new challenge as the Swans looked to regenerate their ruck division, Stafford was traded to Richmond ahead of the 2002 season. At Punt Road, he continued to utilise his heavy frame to protect smaller teammates, often splitting his time between the ruck and full-forward to support the likes of Brad Ottens. His aggressive style occasionally drew the ire of the tribunal, but his competitiveness remained undiminished as he provided experienced leadership to the Tigers' younger talls. He retired at the end of 2006 having just passed the 200-game milestone, leaving the game as a respected enforcer who successfully carved out a long career across two states.
