Bio
Drafted with the prestigious third pick in the 2016 National Draft, Hugh McCluggage arrived at the Gabba from the North Ballarat Rebels as the polished gem of a Lions side desperate for class. Hailing from Warrnambool in country Victoria, he was thrust immediately into the senior side, becoming a cornerstone of the "Baby Lions" rebuild under Chris Fagan. While his early career was occasionally marked by goalkicking inaccuracy, McCluggage matured into the quintessential modern wingerโblessed with elite endurance, "Rolls Royce" movement through traffic, and a creative vision that often unlocked defences better than any inside midfielder could.
McCluggageโs career narrative was defined for years by his "always the bridesmaid" status; he racked up four consecutive All-Australian squad selections (2019-2022) without earning a blazer, often squeezed out by inside midfielders forced onto the flanks. Despite the individual snubs, his loyalty and influence remained unquestioned, famously turning his back on massive offers from Victorian clubs to sign a long-term extension in 2024. That decision was vindicated later that year when he played a pivotal role in delivering the Lionsโ premiership, cementing his status not just as a silky ball-user, but as a hard-running club great who helped drive Brisbane's golden era.
