Recruited from Old Melburnians in the VAFA, Ian McMullin was an opportunistic half-forward who made a spectacular entry into league football with Collingwood. He famously booted five goals in just his second game—an elimination final victory over Fitzroy in 1984—displaying the evasion and goal sense that defined his best football. Despite this electric start, injuries and form fluctuations eventually saw him depart Victoria Park, only for Kevin Sheedy to offer him a lifeline at Essendon via the pre-season draft. He played valuable senior football for the Bombers in the early 1990s before a vocal cord injury sustained in a training accident briefly threatened his career. In a rare twist, McMullin was re-drafted by Collingwood in the 1992 mid-season draft, allowing him to finish his playing days back in black and white. While his on-field career was stop-start, his legacy at the club was cemented off-field, where he served as a pivotal board member and director for two decades during the Magpies' modernisation under Eddie McGuire.
