Bio
Recruited from Blackburn, Ian Scrimshaw began his career at Hawthorn, progressing through the under-19s to make his senior debut in 1974. A creative utility capable of playing on the wing, half-forward, or as a ruck-rover, he made a mid-season switch to Richmond in 1976—a move that saw him immediately slot into the senior side. While not blessed with blistering pace, Scrimshaw was a strong-bodied player who read the play well and used the ball effectively to link up with the Tigers' formidable attack. His career at Punt Road is often defined by a moment of personal misfortune during the club's 1980 premiership campaign; despite playing in both the qualifying and semi-final victories, he was omitted from the Grand Final side to make way for returning players. Scrimshaw remained with the club until the end of 1981, captaining the reserves and winning their best and fairest in his final year before moving to the WAFL, leaving a legacy that continues today through his nephew, current Hawthorn defender Jack Scrimshaw.
