Selected by Adelaide with pick 40 in the 2004 National Draft, Ivan Maric spent the early years of his career battling for the primary ruck mantle at West Lakes. While he proved to be a serviceable contributor across 77 games for the Crows, he ultimately found himself squeezed out of the preferred lineup following the arrival of Sam Jacobs. Seeking greater opportunity, Maric requested a trade to Richmond at the end of 2011, a move that would define his legacy and provide the Tigers with a much-needed physical presence in the centre square.

At Punt Road, Maric quickly evolved from a journeyman into a cult figure, recognised as much for his distinctive mullet as for his honest, combative playstyle. He was not the most athletic ruckman in the league, but his aggression, tackling pressure, and follow-up work at ground level endeared him to the Tiger Army. Maric finished third in the club's best and fairest in his debut season and became a key member of the leadership group, helping to set professional standards for a young list. Although back injuries and the recruitment of Toby Nankervis limited his games in his final season, he retired in 2017 as a beloved clubman who was instrumental in hardening Richmond's competitive edge.
