Bio
A talented sportsman from Williamstown, Jack Barnes was a capable forward for South Melbourne during the late 1920s who averaged nearly two goals a game. Though his stint at the top level spanned just five seasons, he showed his quality in front of the big sticks, most memorably with a haul of six goals against Geelong at the Lake Oval in 1928. A rare dual-code athlete, Barnes also represented Victoria in first-class cricket, scoring a half-century in his solitary match for the state. He eventually returned to the VFA to captain Williamstown, serving as a key leader and goalkicker for the Seagulls before a selection dispute saw him depart for a captain-coach role in the sub-districts. His connection to the Bloods endured through his son, Ken Barnes, who played over 90 games for the club in the 1960s.
