Recruited from University Blues in the amateurs, Jack Cunningham's career is defined by one of the most fortunate spurts of timing in VFL history. The son of former St Kilda and Richmond player Tom Cunningham, he broke into the Hawthorn side late in the 1961 season and found himself lining up in a Grand Final in just his seventh senior game. Operating as a forward pocket and second rover to Ian Law, Cunningham booted a goal in the Hawks' historic maiden premiership victory over Footscray. While his time at the top level was brief, managing just 17 games over three seasons, he remains immortalised at Glenferrie as a member of the club's first-ever flag side.
