Bio
The son of Hawthorn premiership player Jack Cunningham, John Cunningham was a tenacious rover who had to fight exceptionally hard for his brief taste of senior football. After spending time on the lists of both Collingwood and Melbourne without breaking into the senior side, he was recruited from Port Melbourne by Geelong, where he finally made his AFL debut in 1995. A skilled ball-winner with an eye for goal, he played just two matches for the Cats before being delisted, but he subsequently carved out a significant legacy in the SANFL with Norwood. In a defining performance, Cunningham returned from a serious knee injury to win the 1997 Jack Oatey Medal as best on ground in the SANFL Grand Final, cementing his reputation as a premier state-league midfielder.
