Family

Recruited from the local Fitzroy Juniors, Jack Dalton was a foundation player for the Maroons as they transitioned into the newly formed VFL in 1897. A hard-nosed half-back flanker who never troubled the scorers, Dalton was a defensive stalwart in an era where low scores were the norm and physicality was paramount. His crowning achievement came in 1898, where he played a vital role in the club's maiden VFL Premiership victory over Essendon, helping to stifle the opposition forwards in atrocious conditions at the Junction Oval. While he remained a serviceable contributor the following year, injury heartbreak unfortunately robbed him of a place in the side's back-to-back flag triumph in 1899. He played one final campaign in 1900 before retiring, forever etched in club history as a premiership player and a pioneer of the competition.
