Bio
Originally drafted by Adelaide with pick 29 in the 2009 National Draft, Gunston showed immediate potential as a mobile forward before requesting a trade home to Victoria after just two seasons. He joined Hawthorn ahead of the 2012 season and quickly became a linchpin of the club's golden era, playing a crucial role as a link-up target in the historic premiership hat-trick between 2013 and 2015. Renowned as the prototype for the modern medium-tall forward, Gunston built his reputation on elite aerobic capacity, intelligent leading patterns, and reliable set-shot goalkicking.
His individual consistency was rewarded with All-Australian selection in 2018 and the Peter Crimmins Medal in 2020, a season where he stood tall in a regenerating side. After a brief and challenging stint with the Brisbane Lions in 2023 where he struggled to recapture his best form, Gunston returned to Hawthorn via trade the following year. Now in the twilight of his career, he serves as a calming on-field mentor for the Hawks' emerging forward line while closing in on the 300-game milestone.
