Bio
Recruited from Mitta Mitta in north-east Victoria, Jack Scales arrived at Brunswick Street as the younger brother of teammate and decorated war hero Joe Scales. Standing at an imposing 191cm—a distinct rarity for the 1920s—Scales was a giant among men, built to dominate the ruck contests and provide a massive target in the key posts. He debuted in 1923, playing alongside his brother in a strong Fitzroy outfit that went on to finish runners-up, though Jack himself struggled to lock down a permanent place in the senior side. While his brother transferred to St Kilda the following season, Scales remained with the Maroons for a handful of appearances in 1924 before his VFL career came to a close, leaving him as a brief but physically imposing footnote in the club's history.
