Family

Recruited from Mitta Mitta, Joe Scales arrived at Fitzroy as one of the VFL's most decorated soldiers, having been awarded both the Military Medal and Distinguished Service Order for his gallantry in World War I. A tough, defensive-minded utility who played alongside his younger brother Jack, he featured regularly for the Maroons in 1921 but struggled to hold his spot during the club's 1922 premiership campaign. Scales crossed to St Kilda in 1924 for a final season where he was utilised more in attack, managing five goals in 15 appearances. While his on-field tenure was brief, his status as a war hero who received a recommendation for the Victoria Cross ensures his place in football folklore.
