Bio
Born into Fitzroy royalty as the son of 1913 premiership player Jim Toohey Sr and the younger brother of Jim Jr, Jack Toohey continued the family legacy after arriving from North Carlton. A steady half-back flanker, he made an immediate impact in 1947, playing in a semi-final victory over Richmond before a bout of influenza cruelly forced him to miss the Preliminary Final loss to Essendon. His time at Brunswick Street was frequently hampered by a recurring shoulder injury that was prone to dislocation, a physical battle that disrupted his continuity and saw him briefly leave VFL level to captain-coach Holbrook in New South Wales during 1950. Toohey returned to the Lions in 1951 to add to his tally, though he was eventually cleared to St Kilda midway through the 1952 season to finish his VFL career, ultimately retiring to coach Brighton in the VFA.
