Arriving at Port Adelaide as the nephew of Essendon premiership hero Alan Ezard, James Ezard was a clean-handed small midfielder taken with pick 34 in the 2004 National Draft. His brief AFL tenure is best remembered for a singular pre-season highlight in 2005, where he famously kicked a goal after the siren to sink arch-rivals Adelaide in a Wizard Cup clash. Despite those early heroics, Ezard found it difficult to break into the Power's senior rotation, managing just four games across two seasons before being delisted. He subsequently chose to remain in South Australia and carved out a distinguished career in the SANFL with West Adelaide, peaking in 2009 when he was crowned the joint winner of the Magarey Medal as the league's fairest and best player.
