Bio
Drafted by Hawthorn with pick 45 in the 2017 National Draft, James Worpel quickly established himself as a cult hero, affectionately dubbed the "Worpedo" for his fearless attack on the contest. A product of the Geelong Falcons, he made history in just his second season by winning the 2019 Peter Crimmins Medal at 20 years of age, stepping up to anchor the Hawks' midfield during Tom Mitchell's injury-enforced absence. While his output fluctuated during the club's difficult rebuilding phase and a shoulder reconstruction in 2022, Worpel rebounded to reaffirm his status as a premier inside midfielder, renowned for his ability to win the hard ball and bust through congestion.
After eight seasons and 148 games in the brown and gold, Worpel returned to his roots, crossing to Geelong ahead of the 2026 season. A natural clearance specialist with a low centre of gravity, he thrives in the stoppages and provides immediate grunt to the engine room. Having experienced the highs of individual accolades and the grind of recovering top form, he arrives at Kardinia Park as a seasoned campaigner, adding vital experience and contested ball-winning ability to the Cats' midfield group.
