Bio
Selected by Richmond in the 2015 Rookie Draft, Jayden Short entered the AFL via the Northern Knights with little fanfare but developed into one of the league's most effective rebounding defenders. Initially trialled as a small forward, his career truly gained traction when he shifted to half-back, where his elite kicking skills and ability to gain metres became a cornerstone of the Tigers' transition game. Known for his booming right boot and relentless running capacity, Short evolved from a fringe player into a critical architect of Richmond's dynasty, playing a vital role in the 2019 and 2020 premiership victories.
Short's standing within the club was cemented during the unique 2020 season, where he claimed the Jack Dyer Medal as the Best and Fairest in a premiership year—a remarkable feat for a former rookie selection. Throughout the club's transition periods following the triple-premiership era, he remained a consistent performer, often rotating through the midfield to provide drive and experience. Now a seasoned veteran, Short is regarded as a leader of the playing group and remains a prime example of the immense value that can be unearthed in the rookie draft.
