Recruited from Burnie in Tasmania, Jervis Stokes arrived at Punt Road in 1948 to join his older brother Ray at the club. He made his senior debut in Round 7 of that season, stepping directly into the lineup to replace Ray, who had been ruled out with an injury. A versatile centreman and half-forward, Stokes played 33 games over three seasons before departing the VFL to pursue coaching opportunities. He was appointed the inaugural captain-coach of Moorabbin in the VFA in 1951 and later enjoyed significant success in country football, including leading Moe to a premiership in the Latrobe Valley and coaching Scottsdale to a Grand Final in the NTFA.
