Bio
The youngest of ten children from a Trentham sawmilling family, Jim McCashney followed his brothers John and Frank into elite football, initially signing with Hawthorn during their VFA era in 1920. He became a foundational pillar during the club’s promotion to the big league in 1925, cementing his place in history as a member of the Mayblooms' inaugural VFL side that faced Richmond at Glenferrie Oval. A diminutive but reliable winger, McCashney was renowned for his remarkable durability, at one stage stringing together 106 consecutive appearances across the two competitions despite the physical toll of the era. He retired from the top level in 1927 to marry, though he later returned to the field to captain-coach Sandringham during its debut VFA season in 1929.
