Bio
Hailing from the timber town of Trentham where his family operated a sawmill, John McCashney was the pioneer of a footballing family that later saw his younger brothers Frank (Richmond) and Jim (Hawthorn) reach VFL ranks. He broke into the South Melbourne lineup late in the 1903 season, making just two senior appearances in the red and white before his brief tenure at the Lakeside Oval concluded. McCashney subsequently returned to country football with Trentham and Kyneton, later serving on the Western Front during World War I where he sustained severe injuries, eventually returning home to manage sawmills in the Mansfield region.
