Bio
Recruited from local junior club Essendon Stars, Joe Harrison wasted no time establishing himself at Windy Hill, securing a place on the half-back flank for the club's 1923 premiership victory in just his debut season. While he started as a flanker, his role significantly evolved in 1925 when he was entrusted with the daunting task of replacing champion defender Tom Fitzmaurice at centre half-back. Harrison rose to the challenge, utilising his excellent overhead marking and defensive discipline to win the club's Best and Fairest award in 1926 and earn selection for Victoria in back-to-back years. Despite entering his prime as a premier key defender, his VFL career ended prematurely when he departed after the 1927 season to accept a coaching position with Portland in country Victoria.
