Family

The son of former high-flyer Shaun Smith, Joel Smith joined Melbourne as a Category B rookie in 2015, bypassing the traditional draft route after a background in junior basketball. Blessed with elite vertical leaping ability and athleticism, he was deployed primarily as an intercepting defender but demonstrated versatility by occasionally swinging forward to create aerial mismatches. However, his nine-season tenure was defined by frustration, as persistent soft-tissue injuries and shoulder reconstructions repeatedly stalled his momentum, most notably costing him a place in the 2021 Grand Final side after suffering a hamstring strain in the Preliminary Final. His time at the club reached a premature and controversial conclusion in 2024 when he was delisted following a lengthy provisional suspension for an anti-doping violation, leaving behind a career marked by unfulfilled athletic potential.
