Family

Shaun Smith began his career at North Melbourne in the late 1980s, emerging as a talented but occasionally inconsistent forward. Despite showing potential at Arden Street, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior side over seven seasons and found himself out of the AFL system by the end of 1993. After a dominant stint in the VFA with Werribee, Melbourne offered him a professional lifeline via the pre-season draft, where he reinvented himself as a dynamic, medium-sized forward capable of playing well above his height thanks to a prodigious vertical leap.

His tenure at the Demons is immortalised by a single athletic feat during the final round of the 1995 season. Playing against the Brisbane Bears at the Gabba, Smith launched himself over a large pack of players to take what is widely regarded as the "Mark of the Century," a grab that remains a staple of highlight reels decades later. Beyond that iconic moment, Smith was a serviceable goal-kicker and aerial target who revitalised his career in red and blue, eventually retiring in 1998. His connection to the club continued through his son, Joel Smith, who was recruited to Melbourne as a Category B rookie.
