Bio
Born into a genuine Blues dynasty as the son of former player Ted and brother of Vin, John Brown took a remarkably different path to Princes Park than his relatives. Having spent his early sporting life as a competitive rugby player in New South Wales, he finally switched codes and arrived at Carlton as a 26-year-old mature-age recruit in 1950. Brown quickly translated his physical toughness into the Australian game, establishing himself as a disciplined, deep defender who played 90 games without registering a single goal. He served as a reliable pillar in the backline for six seasons before leaving the VFL to captain-coach East Ballarat in 1956.
