Bio
Recruited from Glen Iris, John Fidge was a physically imposing full-forward whose natural talent often teased the prospect of greatness without fully materialising over a long career. The younger brother of Melbourne player Ted Fidge, he burst onto the scene for the Demons as a teenager in 1984 before entering the history books as an inaugural squad member of the Brisbane Bears. Fidge is best remembered for his dominant performance in the Bears' first-ever VFL match in 1987, where he booted five goals to help secure a famous victory over North Melbourne. Possessing strong hands and a powerful kick, he was a dangerous option inside 50 when fit, yet injuries and inconsistency plagued his tenure in Queensland. After a season out of the league, he was thrown a lifeline by Essendon in 1991, but managed only three senior appearances before retiring from the top level.
