Family

Recruited from Corowa in New South Wales, John Longmire arrived at North Melbourne as a prodigious talent and quickly established himself as a dominant key forward. Known universally as "Horse" due to his imposing physical stature, his breakout season arrived in 1990 when, at just 19 years old, he won the Coleman Medal with 98 goals, narrowly missing the century milestone in the final round against Collingwood. A strong-marking target with a reliable left boot, Longmire eventually adapted his game to form a lethal partnership with Wayne Carey, often playing further up the ground or sacrificing his own goal-kicking output for the benefit of the team structure.

His career was significantly hampered by knee injuries, the most devastating of which forced him to watch from the sidelines as North Melbourne won the 1996 premiership. Demonstrating immense resilience, he fought his way back into the senior lineup and occasionally spent time in defence before finally achieving the ultimate success in his last AFL game, the 1999 Grand Final victory over Carlton. Retiring with exactly 200 games and over 500 goals, Longmire transitioned seamlessly into off-field roles, eventually becoming a premiership-winning senior coach at the Sydney Swans to secure his legacy as a heavy hitter in the football landscape.
