Family

Recruited from the local Canterbury Colts, John Peck burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old prodigy and evolved into one of Hawthorn's first genuine superstars. While he initially cut his teeth as a mobile ruckman and key position utility capable of playing at either end of the ground, it was his permanent shift to full-forward that unlocked his true potential. Standing 6'2" with a powerful frame, "Elvis" (a nickname earned for his distinct hairstyle) combined brute strength with deceptive agility, often using his physical presence to intimidate opposition defenders before outmarking them in the contest.

Peck was a central figure in the club's historic 1961 premiership triumph, but his individual dominance peaked in the mid-1960s when he claimed the league's leading goalkicker award (retroactively the Coleman Medal) in three consecutive seasons from 1963 to 1965. Despite his scoring prowess, he remained a rugged on-field enforcer throughout his career, a trait that defined his leadership during a brief stint as club captain. After 213 games in brown and gold, Peck left the VFL to finish his playing days with Port Melbourne in the VFA, cementing a legacy as an eight-time club leading goalkicker and a Hawthorn Hall of Fame inductee.
